Wildfire season getting an early start
INLAND EMPIRE - (INT) - With temperatures in the 90s and no rain for seven weeks, local fire fighters are getting an early look at the oncoming fire season.

A series of fires flared Saturday across the region but spared homes and buildings.

The largest, dubbed the Sterling Fire, started at the north end of San Bernardino and covered 43 acres before it was stopped just inside the San Bernardino National Forest. The air and ground battle involved 17 fire trucks. Air tankers were able to drop a retardant line around the fire about two hours after it was reported.

In Fontana, two vehicles were involved in a 3-acre fire on Baseline Road.

In Riverside County, another fire late Saturday burned through fields near a golf course along East Gilman Street and Alessandro Street north of San Jacinto. A couple of utility poles also burned.
