IE maintains strong solar standing, but suffers state’s longest commutes
SAN FRANCISCO— (INT) - The Inland Empire has lost its statewide lead in installed solar power, according to the ninth annual California Green Innovation Index, released by the nonpartisan nonprofit group Next 10 and prepared by Beacon Economics.

While the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario region earned the top spot in installed solar capacity for both the residential and commercial sectors last year, it has dropped to third place in this year’s ranking, and is now surpassed by Los Angeles and San Diego.

The Index also notes that the rate of decline in California’s carbon emissions has slowed, driven by a sharp increase in emissions from the transportation sector, in part due to the housing crisis pushing up commute times.

The Index finds that the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario region’s commute time is the worst in California for the second year running, averaging 31.3 minutes per day. But it’s not all bad news, as the area does well in clean vehicle rebates, ranking fifth; and is solidly in sixth place for clean tech patents.
