'Handmaid's Tale', HBO's 'Veep' claim top Emmy awards
LOS ANGELES – At the 69th annual primetime Emmy awards, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale picked up the top honor for best drama series while HBO's Veep nabbed a win for best comedy series.

NBC's Saturday Night Live took wins for variety sketch series, directing for Don Roy King and in acting categories for Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin.

HBO's Big Little Lies nabbed honors in the limited series category as well as the acting categories for Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard and in the directing category for Jean-Marc Vallée. Meanwhile, Donald Glover won acting and directing honors for FX's Atlanta.

The Emmys featured a seemingly effortless display of diversity, in a way the Oscars might envy. That aspect of television was celebrated both in a video package and on an impromptu basis by Donald Glover's dual wins for "Atlanta," Sterling K. Brown for "This is Us," and Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe claiming the writing award -- Waithe being the first African-American woman to receive that prize.

Among the individual winners, after seven nominations, “The Handmaid's Tale” star Elisabeth Moss won her first Emmy.

“Black Mirror: San Junipero” won the Primetime Emmy Award for best television movie. The movie is the fourth episode of the third season of the Netflix anthology series.

“Big Little Lies” took the Primetime Emmy Award for best limited series, the fifth win for the HBO series.

Host Stephen Colbert kicked off Sunday night’s 69th Emmy Awards in characteristic style — with snark, a clip from cable news, and jazz hands. The defining moment, in the final minute, was when disgraced former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer wheeled out a podium onstage in order to assure Colbert, jokingly, that the ratings for the night’s broadcast would be great.

Colbert emceed the show at the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.
