Top 20 Largest California Wildfires
SACRAMENTO – (INT) – Mother Nature and humans get the blame for most of California’s biggest wildfires.

Of the twenty largest fires, seven were started by lightning, seven more were ‘human caused’ and three were sparked by power lines, according to a ranking issued Thursday by Calfire.

Calfire’s records date back to 1932, but thirteen of the biggest fires have burned since 2002.

San Diego County’s Cedar Fire in 2003 stands as the largest causing 15 deaths and destroying more than 2,800 buildings.

Seven of the top 10 worst fires occurred in coastal counties.

In a separate ranking, San Bernardino County's arson-caused Old Fire in 2003 was the sixth most-destructive in California with the loss of more than 1,000 buildings.

The ongoing Thomas fire in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties now ranks as the state’s fourth-largest in recent history.
