Flu kills Riverside County child
RIVERSIDE – (INT) – The flu season is getting a foothold in the Inland Empire.

Riverside County health officials are reporting the first flu-related death in the Inland Empire. A 10-year-old Murrieta child fell ill and died, according to an announcement Friday.

It wasn’t disclosed if the child had been immunized or if underlying health issues were involved.

Health officials are urging all adults and children over the age of 6 months to get a flu shot. The standard vaccine protects against three flu strains. Older adults can get a quadravalent which covers four flu strains.

In addition, Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser recommends frequent hand washing and avoiding getting close to people who are sick as ways to avoid the flu.

Flu is also appearing in Southern California’s wildfire zones because smoke and ash is driving people indoors where the virus is more apt to lurk.
