BIG BEAR - (INT) – This week’s storm claimed a fatality, one of two eaglets born last month in a tree-top nest near Big Bear Lake.

The Forest Service said the chick died during the storm that brought 4-inches of rain and sub-freezing temperatures. The surviving chick appears to be doing okay.

Two eggs were laid in early January in the nest of a pair of bald eagles that shared incubation and parenting duties for 35 days including a snow storm.

The nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley installed a live-stream camera near the nest giving viewers an up close and personal encounter of the nest action without causing any disturbance that might result in the eagles abandoning the chicks.
