States ranked for highest, lowest tax burdens Californians carry the nation’s tenth highest overall tax burden and the fifth highest per individual.
WalletHub compared three tax types of state tax burdens — property taxes, individual income taxes and sales and excise taxes — as a share of total personal income. California was fifth highest for individual income tax as a percentage of personal income. Tax burdens were the heaviest in New York and Hawaii with states in New England not far behind.
