Actor Will Ferrell hurt in I-5 crash
MISSION VIEJO – Actor and comedian Will Ferrell was hospitalized after the SUV he was riding in was struck by an apparently sleepy driver causing it to hit the center divider and flip over on the I-5 freeway Thursday night.

Ferrell, 50, was riding in the black Lincoln with three others in the northbound carpool lane just before the crash, said Rafael Reynoso, a California Highway Patrol officer and spokesman.

At the same time, a 22-year-old man was driving a Toyota car in the lane to the right of the SUV, just north of La Paz Road in Mission Viejo.

“The driver of the Toyota apparently had fallen asleep and struck the rear end of the (Lincoln) Navigator causing it to hit the center divider wall,” Reynoso said on Friday.

The SUV then spun and flipped, injuring all four people aboard. One of the passengers, a 27-year-old woman, was not wearing a seat belt and suffered serious injuries, according to CHP report on the incident given to the Orange County Register.

It does not appear that alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash, Reynoso said. No arrests were made.

Ferrell, who grew up in Irvine, had minor injuries and was taken to Saddleback Medical Center
