High speed figures in deadly Lake Havasu boating mishap
LAKE HAVASU – (INT) - Mojave County Arizona authorities have mounted an investigation into a weekend boating mishap on Lake Havasu that killed two people including a retired Redlands police officer.

The victims were identified as Brad Kloepfer, 57, who was operating the watercraft, and a passenger, Paul Selberg, age 69. Another passenger, Connie Davis Kloepfer, 58, was in “extremely critical condition” according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. The victims resided in Lake Havasu City. Brad Kloepfer retired in 2006 after a 22-year career with the Redlands PD.

Investigators determined the large boat was traveling at high speeds when it crashed and then sank in the South Basin of Lake Havasu Several Good Samaritans on boats pulled the victims from the water.

The boat, dubbed “Lickity Split” was recovered from the lake bottom by a local salvage company. The boat was identified as an M35 (35-foot) Wide Body DCB.

Initial investigations showed that all the occupants were in life jackets and that Kloepfer was wearing his safety kill switch. High speeds were a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
