La Nina declared over, another El Nino may be brewing
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – There are early indications that another El Nino may be brewing.
Forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center issued their final advisory on La Nina and predicted a 50-50 chance of the next El Nino returning to the Northern Hemisphere this winter.
Based on sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific and prevailing winds, the oscillation that typically creates wet and dry years has become neutral. But, the forecast models suggest an increasing chance of El Nino’s return with the onset of winter.
Above-average rainfall usually accompanies an El Nino, but that did not happen three years ago in Southern California. It was a year later that generous rains finally ended the 7-year drought in most of California just as a La Nina took over.
