Searing desert heat may have overcome missing couple
AMBOY – (INT) – Mystery surrounds the disappearance of a Virginia couple who may have perished in the searing heat of the Mojave Desert.

William and Susan Schmeirer, who are in their mid 60s, left their home in Williamsburg, Virginia May 27th on a cross-country vacation trip intending to arrive in Palm Springs June 2nd.

A vehicle they were driving was found June 13th abandoned near San Bernardino County’s Amboy Crater. Three days later, searchers found the remains believed those of William Schmeirer.

While the coroner attempts to make positive identification and the cause of death, a search will resume for Schmeirer’s wife.
