Northridge earthquakes occur 25-years apart
NORTHRIDGE - (INT) – A minor earthquake Saturday occurred just 5-days short of the 25th anniversary of the disastrous 1994 Northridge quake.

Saturday’s M3.0 temblor had an epicenter less than 2-miles from its predecessor, caused no reported damage and was felt over a limited area.

The 1994 earthquake occurred on a blind thrust fault, and produced the strongest ground motions ever instrumentally recorded in an urban setting in North America. Damage was wide-spread, sections of major freeways collapsed, parking structures and office buildings collapsed, and numerous apartment buildings suffered irreparable damage. Fifty-seven people had died — including 33 from falling buildings.

The 6.7 magnitude quake was one of the most costly disasters in U.S. history.

The quakes - then and now - shared little in common. Timing was coincidental, but both were likely associated with the Northridge Thrust (also known as the Pico Thrust).
