Freeway shooter was ex-felon
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – An ex-felon in possession of a gun has been accused in last week’s car-to-car freeway shooting in Cajon Pass that injured a 10-year-old boy.

Jose Luis Chavez, 48, of Phelan was already in custody on a trespassing charge when he was linked to the freeway incident, the California Highway Patrol announced Wednesday.

Chavez was initially arrested on suspicion of trespassing at the desert home of a retired sheriff’s deputy. Chavez was contacted shortly after last Thursday night’s incident on Interstate 15. A gun was recovered from Chavez’ car and more firearms were seized at his home.

The CHP said Wednesday that the boy has been released from a hospital after treatment for a head wound.

Chavez will face an additional charge of attempted murder.
