El Nino contributes to winter storms
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – El Nino may have played a role in the back-to-back storms that have brought occasionally heavy rain to Southern California this winter.

Rainfall is above normal and the most in 2-years. Mountain snowfall has been measured in feet on the highest peaks.

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) reports that an El Nino formed during January, but the chances it will persist beyond spring is less than 50 percent. Its impact may be felt in some locations during the next three months.

Above-average sea surface temperatures and changes in the atmospheric circulation are being observed in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The condition is expanding near the International Dateline, the CDC reported.
