Jurupa Hills earthquake swarm gets deeper
JURUPA VALLEY – (INT) – The three-week long earthquake swarm beneath the Jurupa Hills isn’t done yet.

It generated another M3.0 temblor late Sunday afternoon. It was strong enough to rattle windows and was reported by the most people in Ontario.

Several hundred have been recorded, most too weak to be felt. They appear to be occurring deeper beneath the surface starting around 1-mile and now in the 2-3 mile range.

Shang-Lin Chen of the Seismic Network says swarms of small magnitude events are relatively common in this area, extending from Riverside to Chino, known as the Fontana Seismicity Trend.

“Earthquakes in this area are probably related to the tectonic loading of the nearby San Jacinto and San Andreas faults,” Chen said.

Swarms in that area have been recorded back through the 1980s, but none have registered beyond M4.0.

No damage has been reported on the ongoing sequence.
