Officer in Costco shooting identified, attorney offers input CORONA – (INT) – Los Angeles police say their off-duty officer who shot and killed a mentally challenged man and wounded his parents at the Costco store June 14th was Salvador Sanchez.
Sanchez was assigned to the LAPD’s Southwest Division and is now on administrative leave. His employment background was not released. Sanchez' attorney claims the officer was struck without provocation by Kenneth French and knocked unconscious. Sanchez fired his service revolver killing French and seriously wounding his parents. Sanchez was holding his son before the incident happened. There have been no arrests and no charges have been filed, at last report. Corona Police Chief George Johnstone took to social media earlier this week with a warning that “Most of the information (about the officer-involved shooting at the Costco store) on social media is hearsay and erroneous.” Johnstone did not specify which reported facts are false and offered no additional details of the incident that left an assault suspect dead and his parents seriously wounded. The chief pledged a complete, impartial and thorough investigation but could not give a timeline for its completion. Chief Johnstone said in a video statement that investigators are having some trouble interviewing all the parties involved and he encouraged other shoppers who witnessed the incident last Friday to come forward. Earlier, police said that there had been an assault and that the officer felt threatened. But, details of the assault were not disclosed. The officer was slightly injured and given hospital treatment. Video: https://www.coronaca.gov/Home/Components/News/News/4020/17 Story Date: June 25, 2019
