SACRAMENTO – (INT) – Caltrans is shifting work schedules in hopes of minimizing fatalities in work zones.

Among three new safety initiatives is the Flexible Work Windows. It involves a reduction in the number of days that crews are exposed to traffic. Crews can work longer hours and fewer days on a project, as opposed to working fewer hours and more days.

Over the past 5-years, 3,000 people were killed nationwide in work zone mishaps
