Lawmakers cap legislative year; Newsom praises accomplishments SACRAMENTO – (INT) – Governor Newsom is thanking lawmakers for their accomplishments of the just-ended legislative year.
Newsom singled out the strongest package of renter protections in the nation, a $1 billion investment to prevent, mitigate and recover from wildfires, disasters and emergencies, a historic $1.75 billion in new housing construction funding and $1 billion to fight homelessness, returned $1 billion in the pockets of working families through an expanded tax credit and invested more money in the K-14 system than any other time in state history. For the first time in decades, California now offers two years of tuition-free community college for students. Newsom praised community activists and law enforcement for agreement on historic new use of force standards. In a statement issued Saturday, Newsom said “California did all of this while living within our means: creating the largest rainy day fund in California history, paying down pension liabilities and eliminating our state’s wall of debt.” Story Date: September 17, 2019
