Governor Newsom wields veto pen on 54 bills SACRAMENTO – (INT) – In his final act of the 2019 legislative year, Governor Newsom signed twelve bills, but vetoed many more.
Fifty-four passed the Legislature, but were nixed by the governor. It was his biggest veto session of the year. One failed bill would have would have barred California cities from striking tax-sharing deals with retailers like Amazon and Apple, finding that rural communities rely on the agreements to spur employment. Another bill biting the dust would have authorized up to $2 billion in annual state funding for affordable housing projects in California. Days before he vetoed Senate Bill 5, Newsom indicated he wasn’t likely to sign off on expensive measures due to the budget’s financial limitations. SB 5 was supported by a vast network of mayors, cities, labor leaders and the League of California Cities. Among the bills getting the governor's approval, Assemblymember James C. Ramos (D – Highland) says his bill AB 1767 would expand school district suicide prevention policies that are age-appropriate to kindergarten and grades 1 to 6. Story Date: October 17, 2019
