Earthquake warning system goes statewide
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – California’s new Earthquake Early Warning System takes on added value Thursday.

A new smartphone application combines traditional alert and warning delivery methods such as Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA).

The system uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before they can be felt and will notify Californians so that they can “Drop, cover and hold on” in advance of the shaking.

The improved statewide system, the first of its kind in the nation, comes on the 30th anniversary of the deadly Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989.
