Immigrants fail in perilous drainage tube crossing
SAN YSIDRO – (INT) – Twenty undocumented immigrants tried to take advantage of the Thanksgiving night storm, but were trapped in a drainage tube underneath the border. One perished.

During a 4-hour period, Border Patrol agents undertook rescue operations as water was rising inside the tube located about 2-miles from the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Several of the would-be immigrants had fallen down the tube and were reached through a manhole. Another was found dead on the nearby beach at the Tijuana River mouth.

All the survivors, including 15 Mexican nationals, were taken to a hospital for treatment and recovery.

“Inclement weather conditions and perilous drainage pipe water flows, significantly increase the odds of a grim outcome,” said Chief Border Patrol Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison.
