Virus claims second Riverside County deputy
RIVERSIDE – (INT) - A second Riverside County sheriff’s deputy has died of complications from the COVID-19 virus.

Deputy David Werksman, a 22-year veteran of the RSO, died Thursday, according to an announcement Friday by the department.

Deputy Werksman, 51, worked assignments at the Robert Presley Detention Center, Jurupa Valley Station, Hazardous Device Team, Lake Elsinore Station, and the Sheriff’s Administration.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

His passing follows that of Deputy Terrell Young. He was the first member of the department to lose his life to the virus.

Deputy Young served the RSO for 15-years with the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility, Perris Station, Court Services, Southwest Station, and most recently at the Cois Byrd Detention Center. Deputy Young is survived by his wife and four children.

Governor Newsom is among distraught Californians. “The deaths of these two heroes are a very real and painful reminder of the risk these women and men face every single day protecting the people of California."

Several members of Inland Empire police and fire agencies have been diagnosed with the coronavirus. Most are confined to their homes and are recovering.
