Anza aftershocks unabated, rural region on the move
ANZA – (INT) – Friday evening’s M4.9 earthquake set off a wave of aftershocks that is likely to continue.

During the first 12-hours, the aftershocks were occurring every 2-3 minutes but most are not being felt. By Sunday, the aftershock count was nearing 1,000. There has been no reported damage.

The epicenter is about 11 miles east-southeast of this rural Riverside County community near the north edge of the Anza-Borrego Desert in the San Jacinto Fault Zone. It is a well-documented ‘hot spot’ on the Clark Fault.

Seismologist Jennifer Andrews says the main event was a strike-slip earthquake consistent with the motion of the San Jacinto Fault, the most active in Southern California.

Since 1932, there have been 42 events of M4.0 or greater in that immediate area. The strongest was an M5.6 in 2005.

There is only a 5% chance of a larger quake, Ms. Andrews said.
