Reactions: “Restore trust, system must change, address racism”
INLAND EMPIRE – (INT) – Community leaders across the State are reacting to the events that have followed the police killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, in Minnesota.

Statement from City of Corona: “The City respects the rights of citizens to gather and to express their views peacefully. These freedoms are a fundamental part of American democracy. Planned protests at local parks and other public spaces are lawful and permitted, as are other gatherings to honor the life of George Floyd. Corona Police will be on hand for these events to protect our citizens’ First Amendment rights and to ensure our residents can safely assemble, speak out and grieve together.”

Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (D-Pomona): “From law enforcement to clergy, teachers to elected officials, everyone has a role to play in restoring peace and trust in our justice system. I look forward to the conversation as we all strive for justice for the Floyd family and meaningful change to our society.”

University of California Board of Regents Chair John A. Pérez and President Janet Napolitano: “In our role as educators, researchers, and civic leaders, we must prepare our youth to participate vigorously in civic discourse and democracy. A robust civic discourse requires the truth: The killings must stop. The system must change.”

Statement from City of Menifee: “The City of Menifee deeply honors freedom of speech and expression, but violence is not the answer, and is prepared to ensure our community continues to thrive and prosper through these difficult times.”

San Bernardino County Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman: “All of us are experiencing a mix of emotions as we see both the best and worst of our citizenry. Our country is hurting right now."

Riverside County Schools Superintendent Judy White: "When history is happening in front of us, it is our responsibility to ask ourselves, “What side of history do we want to be on?”

Congressman Mark Takano (D-Riverside): “We must demilitarize our police force nationwide and demand better training to prevent excessive use of force and improve de-escalation tactics. "
