Ridgecrest Sequence thousands of aftershocks later
RIDGECREST – (INT) – Aftershocks are continuing on a daily basis since a pair of strong earthquakes that became known as the ‘Ridgecrest Sequence’ struck a year ago.

The M6.4 and M7.1 quakes caused millions of dollars in damage mostly on the China Lake Naval Base where repairs continue.

An estimated 26,000 aftershocks occurred in the first three months after the quakes and they continue although most are not felt.

The initial jolt appeared to have broken across two faults in the Airport Lake Fault Zone. The M7.1 earthquake on July 5th was in the same fault zone.

Seismologists say the aftershocks are expected to continue for months to years, but the magnitude and number will decrease through time, much the same scenario that followed the 1991 Landers quake.
