Attempt to siphon millions in pandemic relief funds away from schools alleged SACRAMENTO – (INT – A coalition of attorneys general are accusing the US Department of Education of attempting to siphon pandemic relief funds away from K-12 public schools.
The lawsuit alleges Education Secretary Betsy DeVos tried to undermine congressional intent through the promulgation of regulations that unlawfully reinterpret the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and run counter to efforts to ensure that students and schools with demonstrated financial need to get the resources they have been promised. As a result, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said “Tens of millions of dollars in California alone could be diverted away from taxpayer-funded public schools in our poorest school districts to private institutions.” Story Date: July 14, 2020
