Poll examines support for Black Lives Matters movement SAN FRANCISCO – (INT) - Almost seven in ten Californians strongly (31%) or somewhat (37%) support the Black Lives Matter movement—which has been at the forefront of protests against police brutality and systemic racism.
A poll by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found majorities across demographic groups and regions of the state support the Black Lives Matter movement. Notably, 85% of African Americans, 79% of Latinos, and 78% of adults under 35 express favorable views. Democrats (91%) and independents (65%) are much more likely than Republicans (25%) to express support for Black Lives Matter. Most Californians view the criminal justice system as biased against African Americans. At least half across the state’s regions and demographic groups hold this view. Here, too, there are partisan differences, with strong majorities of Democrats (84%) and independents (66%) but fewer Republicans (30%) saying there is racial bias. Story Date: August 14, 2020
