Shooting near White House interrupts Trump briefing, president is safe
WASHINGTON – (INT) – President Trump’s latest coronavirus briefing was interrupted Monday by a shooting near the White House.

A Secret Service agent abruptly escorted Trump from the podium in the White House briefing room. The president returned several minutes later to announce that a suspect in the shooting was wounded and taken to a hospital.

"I'd like to thank the Secret Service for doing their always quick and very effective work, but there was an actual shooting, and somebody's been taken to the hospital. I don't know the condition of the person. Seems that the person was shot by Secret Service, so we'll see what happens," Trump said.

A senior administration official confirmed that there was active shooter and the shooter is in custody.

The Secret Service said in a statement late Monday evening that the incident had begun when a 51-year-old man approached a Secret Service Officer at 17th Street Northwest and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest near the White House.

"The suspect approached the officer and told the officer he had a weapon. The suspect then turned around, ran aggressively toward the officer, and in a drawing motion, withdrew an object from his clothing," the statement said.

"He then crouched into a shooter's stance as if about to fire a weapon. The Secret Service officer discharged his weapon striking the individual in the torso."

Two law enforcement sources told CNN that the wounded person was unarmed.
