Climate change cited in summer electrical shutdown
SACRAMENTO – (INT) – Planning to avert rotating electricity outages is not keeping pace with events related to climate change.

That’s the upshot of a preliminary root cause analysis by the the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), and the California Energy Commission (CEC) announced Friday.

The report stated “Resource planning targets have not evolved to keep pace with climate change-induced extreme weather events and that energy market practices did not perform as intended during stressed conditions.”

A letter to Governor Newsom the agencies said “We will continue our review of the root causes of the August events (shut downs) as more data becomes available and provide a final analysis by the end of the year.”
