First-responders working under COVID Assess and Refer system
SAN BERNARDINO - (INT) – As hospitalizations from the coronavirus pandemic continue to rise, San Bernardino County is taking steps to limit the number of patients treated in hospital ER’s. All first-responders are working under a temporary Assess and Refer system.

This comes as a record number of people are hospitalized in the county with COVID-19 surpassing the previous high set during a summer surge.

Officials announced Friday that calling 911 and being taken by ambulance will not guarantee a frontline spot in the emergency room or even a COVID-19 test.

911 calls increased with the start of the annul flu season and hospital visits from the public. It’s putting a strain on the county’s EMS system and delaying attention in emergency receiving rooms.

Officials say it a patient’s condition is stable, is not over 65 years of age, does not have an underlying medical history but COVID-19 is suspected, the individual should self-isolate and seek follow-up treatment with their physician.
