Absentee students sought for distance learning
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – The San Bernardino City Unified School District has mounted its most ambitious attempt yet to get absentee students into distance learning during the pandemic.

The goal was to visit 1,000 student homes in one day, Tuesday February 23rd.

Operation Student Recovery brings teams of school administrators and community volunteers to the homes of truant students to personally invite them back to school and offer assistance in overcoming whatever barriers are preventing their attendance.

During an initial visitation last October, 39 participants deployed in teams of two or three, traveled in separate vehicles, and donned face coverings to conduct visits to the homes of 105 students.

With distance learning, assignments are still being graded and those grades will figure in the quarter and semester grades. And those quarter and semester grades will be a major factor in whether or not a student is promoted to the next grade.

School attendance is mandatory in California, even if it is virtual.
