Huge drug bust nets hundreds of arrests, tons of drugs
SANTA ANA--A nearly two-year Drug Enforcement Administration operation that nabbed 755 people with suspected ties to Mexican cartels is over.
"Operation Xcellerator" is credited with taking 23 tons of narcotics off the streets.
The agency arrested 13 people with ties to the cartel in Orange County.
The effort resulted in the seizure of more than $59 million in cash and tons of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, approximately 1.3 million dosage units of ecstasy plus 169 weapons, according to the DEA.
The operation was a 21-month investigation that stretched from California to Maryland, apprehending members of multiple drug networks, primarily the Sinaloa Cartel, which officials said operates in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada.
