Recession hits local farmers
Agriculture production in San Bernardino County took a ‘hit’ last year as the economic downturn set in.
Excess milk production and a drop in consumer demand for nursery products because of a slow-down in the construction industry were partly off-set by an increase in the value of eggs and field crops. County ‘AG’ Commissioner John Gardner says there are opportunities in his county. “If it’s a high-value crop such as nurseries, there can be a ‘go’ of it especially in the San Bernardino area. We do have adequate water supplies which is not true in some other parts of the state.” The gross value of agriculture in San Bernardino County last year fell by 24-point-7 million dollars.
